Does what it does very well, but limited - can't work with the documents, just create them. But it's easy to open them in preview, and you can do a fair amount with pdf's in preview in OS Lion. This is a very simple and straightforward little app. If you're a home user that needs to convert a few small documents once in a while, then I say don't waste your money on something with more features.

Feb 04, 2014  Now that Abbyy's FineReader Pro ($99.99) has arrived for the Mac, it's still true that Windows has better OCR software, but that's only because Abbyy's Windows-based OCR app, Abbyy FineReader 11. ABBYY FineReader is an optical character recognition (OCR) software that provides unmatched text recognition accuracy and conversion capabilities, virtually eliminating retyping and reformatting of documents.

And it does not have a word limit, like Iris (50 pages). I'm presently using Finereader for Mac to digitize my books and have had no difficulties. Note that you won't find free trials of any of these programs, but you probably won't have any trouble with them either. If you want to create fully searchable pdfs or fully editable text documents, all will do an excellent job. There's no free option I'm aware of, though for limited use there are online OCR options, such as OCR Terminal. Click to expand. This is a very simple and straightforward little app.

Corporate Edition and Pro, enjoy!!!

Other useful features in PDFpen including the ability to digitally sign PDFs with your trackpad or mouse, scan documents using your iPad or iPhone and re-order. PDFpen is generally fast and for those that regularly need to edit and convert PDF documents, it’s a good budget alternative to Adobe Acrobat Pro. PDFpen costs $74.95 although there’s also PDFpen Pro for $124.95 which includes added features such as Microsoft Excel export support, ability to create and edit forms and turn websites into PDF. Is via email only.

I used it recently and was quite pleased. I actually have Acrobat Pro as part of my Creative Suite (CS.) Other than OCR, you would gain full control over the PDF file (if that's what you wanted to create.) It really is a powerful program and worth a look. The full standalone version has a list price of $450, but can be found for much less. I tried out OCRKit this morning, and it worked perfectly, certainly if OCR is the ONLY feature you need than that program seems to fit the bill perfectly although it is not free (about $50.). There is a 3rd option that is probably the best: ABBYY's Finereader Express for Mac. It's $100 vs. Omnipage's $500.

User Review/Comment: 1.“ Readiris 15 helps me save a lot of time while retyping documents imported from my scanner.”2.“Readiris 15 lets me backup important documents in the cloud and easily retrieve them.”Screenshot. OCRKit Features and Functions: It is a powerful and light OCR software.

After Analysis, save the file and close the Preflight tool. Finally, open the Layer panel on the left to reveal the new layers. If you click on the eye symbol to the left of Invisible text, you can toggle the layers on and off to compare and decide whether to keep the corrections Adobe Acrobat has suggested. Overall, when it comes to OCR converting and editing in PDF format, Adobe Acrobat Pro DC is still the most powerful PDF editing software for Mac out there. If you need to edit PDF documents after scanning, or sign and send them instantly, there is still no better application than Adobe’s Acrobat Pro.

Pros: It supports both Mac and Windows. It supports over 60 languages that includes German, Chinese, French and definitely English. It supports JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP and almost all image formats as the input. Cons: The community version is free, but is very limited. Promises to recognize all formats, but sometimes fail to do so. User Review/Comment: 1. “Simple and easy to use OCR app that I find very useful for my needs, but does have limitations.”2.

• Reduce Paperwork: It allows you to go paperless in the home or office by creating an archive of PDF files that you can search and retrieve at anytime. This improves organization and helps you locate this quicker than having to go through reams of paperwork. • Create eBooks: If you want to read a document on the move on your Kindle or other eBook device, many OCR programs allow you to export documents to ePUB or FB2 format. • Text-To-Speech Apps: Once a document has been scanned, you can access them via text-to-speech apps and tools. If you want to search a document for keyword for example using Siri, you can use just say the word and find what you’re looking for quicker.

If so, VueScan Pro for Mac could be for you. VueScan is a flatbed scanning OCR software that works with virtually all brands of scanners new and old. The default language for VueScan Pro is English but you can for another 32 languages.

In the Windows version, you can do all this without exiting the OCR app. The menu structure in FineReader Pro could also use some fine-tuning. When I performed step-by-step OCR, after importing pages from my scanner, I went to the Page menu and clicked 'Read page,' at the top of the menu, in order to convert the image into text. But the app gave me an error message saying that the page had not been processed yet.

Wish it could convert multiple files at once, but still a working app.”Screenshot. Abbyy FineReader Pro Features and Functions: This OCR transforms the paper documents along with digital text into editable and searchable files.

I've tried some other ones and haven't found anything better than your software!” 2. “This my friends is an AWESOME program. It converts it into EXACTLY what you want it to be. There is NO difference in the format or style or anything, it is identical” Screenshot: Free OCR Software for MAC.

The results won’t be perfect and you’ll have a lot of cleaning up to do but it’s definitely quicker than typing an entire document. If you’re not bothered about formatting and just want a way to extract text from documents in a document scanner, VueScan Pro is an effective way to enhance the OCR capabilities of your document scanner. Pros: Enables your flatbed document scanner to OCR documents Extracts text from documents Cons: Only useful for dumping text into a text file Picatext is an ultra basic and budget OCR app to simply scan and dump text from images.

If Acrobat Pro is uncertain, it highlights the word as suspect so that you can easily see it and then check it manually yourself. To use this feature, simply search for “Preflight” in the Search Tools box on the top right-hand side of the interface. In the OCR Preflight search bar, type OCR and select Make OCR text visible. Then just click the Analyze and fix button at the bottom.

If you just want to extract text from screenshots for example, it’s a very good option. It does not support PDFs though. Picatext is generally surprisingly good at extracting text from images or screenshots and supports over 40 languages. It does struggle with lower resolution images however and with font styles such as italics. Picatext can only handle one image at a time making it fine for one-off or occasional OCR scanning needs. Simply drag and drop documents into Picatext or access it from the Menu Bar. If you choose the Menu Bar option, Picatext shows a mini preview of the document and allows you to select all or part of the document that you want to scan.

Getting Started You can use FineReader Pro either in its automated mode or in a mode that lets you adjust its settings at each stage of its operation. In automated mode, you simply choose an operation from the opening menu and let the program do its work—for example. On the left-hand side of the opening menu, you select a source—either your scanner or a file on your disk. On the right-hand side, you choose an automated operation, such as 'Convert to Excel Spreadsheet.'

Condense supports 35 different languages and is generally a very quick, easy and effective solution for dumping text into file. Condense sits in your Menu Bar and all you need to to do is select the “Scan” option and use the cross-hairs to select the text you want to scan.

Can't review it until it installs/runs.”2. “I would not go back to any other OCR software.I have been usingFineReader 12and prior to that FineReader 11. I tried FineReader 12 and found the accuracy is absolutely amazing. I have very few, if any corrections to make to the text. I use FineReader 12 to prepare my presentations and print them out with my word processor. It does not matter how many pages I need to convert - FineReader handles them all easily and I can proof them right in the software.

If you want to create a PDF with corrected output, you'll need to export the document to Word or Excel, make corrections there, and then export the corrected document to PDF. When you export a file, a checkbox lets you tell the app to highlight characters that it's doubtful about so that you can find them quickly in the output document, but this means you'll have to remove the highlighting after making corrections.
