This is gonna require a bit of a learning curve. But if you want slick user interface and great sounds, you might want to check out Logic Express (only if you're a Mac user). Logic makes it easy to create great-sounding loops, and you could easily make a 32-bar tune into a loop that you can practice over indefinitely. Or make your own 5-minute Aebersold-style track, if you're feeling ambitious. I know, I know, maybe not the best advice for someone looking for the basics, but I'm a huge Logic geek.

There you can change almost anything, and of course, copy and paste whatever parts you want. After editing you should push the button 'Editor to Leadsheet'. Loop: there's a Looping group wich has a Loop green button and a text you can edit.

There's nothing to replace the diversity of stuff that BIAB is capable of. Jammer I never got on with it seemed to take more time to get it to behave how I wanted than it would to learn to play the track on the piano in the first place. Theres' a really good alternative if all you want is quick midi progressions and inspiration for song ideas without the whole process becoming so cumbersome that it kills any ideas, that is Chordpulse. The styles are a tad less cheesy and jazz standard oriented than most of the BIAB stuff and for prototyping new songs it really is the bomb. A great tool to have alongside BIAB. Quick and simple and there's even a free version which just handles 4 chord passages which is quite useful in itself if you are looking for a bridge or a chorus to go with a verse.

Forget the user interface on BIAB, it sucks, it always has sucked, and that's that. But it's a great tool. I use this approach when creating backing tracks: 1) use one of the good jazz styles, like the Wynton Kelly or McCoy styles (or one of the latin styles for bossa/salsa).

However, and not wanting to sound too pure or cranium lodged in nether region, there are philosophical and practical reasons (which would bore you to tears and don't belong on this board anyway) why I will never again knowingly use a MS product or anything dependent on the MS operating system. I realize that once connected to the internet I lose control over that but I can control what happens in my own space on my own computer. As for Apple, I found Steve Jobs to be too pretentious by half, especially for a guy whose company was bankrolled by MS so that Bill Gates could tell the US Justice Department that he really did have a viable competitor.

Every jazz player should have it. I know a number of well known teachers who use it over the aebersold playa longs. Forget the user interface on BIAB, it sucks, it always has sucked, and that's that. But it's a great tool.

I'm looking for something I can play along with and do some basic composing. (I play tenor saxophone.) What about all the extra style sets? Are they worth it?

I want a program that will let me input chords,select a style,and then press play. What I want out of the speakers is a modern sounding lifelike ‘modifiable’band performance.

I will never go back to BIAB for practicing. With 2000+ songs ready to be downloaded from their forum,in most cases you don’t even have to create a chord progression. (3) I was allowed to install on my new Mac all the programs I had purchased for my PC,including Ableton Live,Max/MSP,SampleTank and SonicSynth. The one and only software company that does NOT permit to use the Windows license on a Mac is –of course –PGMusic and their Band-in-a-Box. They expect me to pay for a crossgrade (though the instructions are contradictory). Surely not a customer-friendly policy.

If I wanted to go the BIAB route with this, would I need to purchase the entire BIAB package, or could I just get the basic version and output midi to use with Kontakt? Does the basic version of BIAB output every style of music, or do you have to buy the 'styles' along with the sound files?
