So, to get the image to paste correctly, I have to right-click in OneNote and then choose the 'Paste as image' paste option. Alright, I gave this a go on Wikipedia. It looks like when you copy an image from Chrome, it publishes the image data to the clipboard correctly. It also publishes HTML data and the URL. When OneNote gets this, it decides what it wants to paste as. Given an image, HTML, and a URL, the majority of the time the HTML content will be the richest, since it can contain the image and more data as well, so we go with that. Well, you know the rest.in this scenario OneNote can't actually reach the image you copied and it fails pretty spectacularly.

It seems more like the URL for the image is actually information that is interpreted by a custom web server on the back end that interprets the HTTP GET request in a non-standard method (for images) and then feeds back to the browser the appropriate image out of a database of images (as opposed to just pulling it from a file in a file system). But then, for all I know, this could be the 'standard' method now. Please note what I said in an earlier comment. Some images are being downloaded from Canvas by OneNote. Just the ones that Canvas didn't bury in a database. So, the reason for the error is not that the content is on a server that requires authentication.
