It seems to me that all these efforts to make the program easier to use are fine until a file gets corrupted, but at that point all the elegance and simplicity of Time Machine are for nothing: the naive user won't have backed up their data, and won't know where to find Time Machine's backup of their data file.
Has announced the release of a new package of free templates for its consumer-oriented relational database application aimed at organizing a family’s every activity from chores to meal planning. Called, the new offer also includes a 30-day free trial of Bento, after which families who want to continue using the templates will have to purchase a full version of the database software, which retails for $49. Each of the templates in the package covers a specific family activity. For example, you could organize your shopping, set up and track all your bill payments and even assign chores to each member of your family—which is sure to make the product a winner with the teenage kids in every house. Bento 3 requires Mac OS X 10.5.7 or 10.6 and higher; the templates that come with the Family Organizer package are also compatible with the and versions of the software.

Filemaker has a mobile app. Both are overly complex and way over the top pricewise for normal mortals, which is why no enthusiastic recommendation for them will ever ever grace my lips. Bento was a fundamentally handicapped app.
Bento 3’s new Simple List field type creates free-form tables. Pressing the tab key creates a new column, and you use the arrow keys to navigate between columns and rows. FileMaker bills the feature as a way to create quick to-do lists or manage other lists. The updated database app also adds new security options, including an encrypted field type for storing sensitive data. With this feature in place, Bento prompts you for a database password; once you’ve provided it, you can click on the Quick Look icon to see the contents of an encrypted field. Other security features let you assign a database password for your entire Bento database or provide a “sharing password” for other Bento users on your LAN. Additional changes in Bento 3 include a group e-mailing feature that lets users send an e-mail to multiple recipients via OS X’s Mail app with just a few clicks, the capability to print a blank version of any form, and the capability to add a static image box—a logo for a home-based business, say—to any form.
The magazine also recently named Bento for iPad among the top 10 business apps for iPad. 'When you run your own business, you have enough to deal with just making and selling your products,' says Ryan Rosenberg, vice president, marketing and services, FileMaker, Inc. “We built the Bento Business Organizer to help the solo business owner with all the other details, including organizing contacts and clients, tracking products and projects, managing orders and inventory, coordinating events and tasks, and even printing 'quick response' or QR code labels.'
A new export feature (Template with Data) gives you a way to easily share a template pre-populated with your content; very handy for workgroups or family use. You can also do a one-button upload of your prized template (sans data) to the if you think it's worthy/useful. For data entry on the go, Bento 4 includes a location field type that can be applied to any record. Once it's there, it can automatically populate your latitude and longitude at the time the record is modified, based on your Wi-Fi or GPS coordinates; this syncs/tracks with the iOS versions of Bento as well, so for mobile professionals (insurance/legal, real estate, civil engineering, etc.) who have a need to geotag their content, this seems like a winner. Another data type that's syncing with the iOS Bento versions is voice memos. These can be captured on the Mac or on iPhone/iPad, letting you easily associate short audio snippets with a record for future reference.
It automatically imported contacts and calendar events, provided iTunes-like search tools, and let users drag-and-drop items for import. The company rapidly iterated on that initial release— came out in late 2008, in 2009, and the current version,, in 2011—adding integration with Mail and iPhoto, multi-user sharing, improved security, and more along the way. FileMaker says that it is discontinuing Bento in order to focus on its namesake product line. If you want a database product, the company is encouraging you to take a look at FileMaker Pro. The company does offer a migration tool that helps you move data from Bento 4 for Mac to FileMaker Pro 12. The Mac version can also export databases to Numbers, Excel, and comma- or tab-delimited formats. Those who used just the iOS versions of Bento can get a free trial version of the app for the Mac, sync their iOS data to that, then export from there to whatever new format they choose.
Those looking for old software updates will be able to download those from the until July 30, 2014 (and possibly beyond). And Bento’s support forums will also continue to be moderated until then.
Also supports database syncing with Bento for Mac 4.1, and includes support for working with Bento 4 for iPad templates in a long from view. Bento doesn’t support syncing data via iCloud, but the app design team told TMO that they’re looking into adding that later. DDH Software has both Windows and Mac desktops, but the Mac desktop pretty much sucks. Instead, the developer has provided an X11 cross platform Handbase desktop app that works essentially like the Windows desktop except on Mac OSX. It works, but adds an unnecessary level of complexity to working with your Handbase files. I’ve suggested to David Haupert repeatedly that an iCloud or Dropbox interface is sorely needed. He just hasn’t pulled the trigger. If you need robust desktop DB applications, then Access or Filemaker are better choices than Bento.

BJT, the idea behind all the iWork apps seemed to be to have non-Pro apps for non-Pro uses. Pages cannot do a great many things a Word expert feels are needed/useful, but works exceptionally well for lighter-duty work. The same with Numbers – it may not be up to doing the book-keeping for a Fortune 500 business but it can certainly handle our integrated, multi-generational household. A little rethinking of Bento and it could fit in with those other household-level players. While FileMaker is a superior database product, who needs to hire a DB-manager to keep track of their silverware, their kid’s soccer team, or the details of next summer’s vacation!

Click to expand.I'm not sure I know what you're saying, but I think it's the opposite of what I said. I mean if I'm in the office, and my wife phones while she's out asking me to check something in her email, I can't simply log in to her computer across the network, fire up Mail.app and check her emails, because Mail will look at *my* home directory for its data.

It is not “flat” nor “pretty flat” its a relational database with “one level down.” My next project is to do employee payroll on it. HanDBase was recommended as a very good DB app where the workflow is primarily on the mobile device.

How about you bundle it with iWork, at the iWork price, and do just a little feature-creep on it. It’s not like you’ve done a huge amount of work on iWork ’09, other than adding the iCloud interface.
